BARBELLS FOR BOOBS 2018 [gdlr_divider type=”solid” size=”50%” ] When we opened our doors in 2014, we had no idea who would be lead to walk through our doors. Four years later, we have had the privilege to work with 7 breast cancers fighters and survivors. Back then, we had no idea how big of an impact this disease would have on our entire community. From having members join after fighting their biggest battle of their lives, to others being diagnosed and walking through treatment with us, we are grateful to have been able to share in their journey. My CrossFit Journey Growing up I played multiple sports at a competitive level. Sports were just one of those things for me where I could step onto the field or court and immediately feel as if nothing else in life mattered. I felt ageless and limitless. As I became older and sports went away I really missed having that feeling. Getting That Feeling Back I started my CrossFit journey in Iowa in 2013. I had several neighbors and friends who were into CrossFit which I knew very little about. The one thing I noticed in common about all of my “CrossFit friends” was they were all incredibly fit and they “loved” to talk about their workouts. From the age of five until I was 18 I was a gymnast. I competed until the age of 13 and then began cheerleading and gymnastics through Jr. High and High School. I loved the competitiveness and performance of each of these things. They gave me purpose and kept me busy outside of school. At 18 I graduated high school and of course was finished with my extra curricular activities. About a year after graduating high school I started to have severe lower back pain…to the point of not being able to stand up right after getting out of bed. I saw a doctor about a year after the pain started and after a couple of tests the verdict was “a slipped disc.” Physical therapy was ordered. “If you can strengthen your core it will help it heal in time,” they said. I left every appointment in more pain than...

My relationship with crossfit began exactly two weeks after Memorial Day 2014. Our son played rugby with Nakahi RFC and the coaches began to encourage the boys to participate in crossfit during the off season. I had heard of crossfit but didn’t really know what it was all about. A couple, new to town, invited the boys to a free “Hero” workout at a local park Memorial Day weekend. Aaron, our son, came home afterward and told us how horrible it was, but assured us he did it. There must have been something to it because the boys were given an open invitation to come to the park, every Saturday morning throughout the summer, and to bring their family and friends. In order to find common ground with our son, my husband Tim, made the decision to go with Aaron the next weekend. Even our daughter, Amber, got in on...
