Get ready for the 2022 CrossFit Open!

If you have ever participated in the CrossFit Open you know that this time of year brings excitement, anticipation, and perhaps a little bit of nervousness for the CrossFit community. The CrossFit Open is such an incredible time of year for boxes all across the globe including ours! Here is what you need to know to get prepped for the 2022 CrossFit Open!

What is The Open?

The Open is a 3 week competition where athletes from all around the world compete to see where they place worldwide. For competitive athletes, it is the first step in qualifying for the 2022 NoBull CrossFit Games. But for everyone else it’s a time to come together as a community, celebrate our fitness and health, and cheer each other on! Workouts are released each week on Thursday at 12pm Pacific Time and we will complete them as a gym every Friday night during our Friday Night Lights events! Each week of Friday Night Lights we dress up with a specific theme to add in even more fun. Below are our themes for this year.

  • February 25th -Neon
  • March 4th – Red White and Blue
  • March 11th -St Patrick’s Day

How do I register?

You can register by going to https://open.crossfit.com/. It costs $20 to sign-up to be able to log your score on the world leaderboard each week by Monday night at 5pm PT.

What if I’m not a competitor?

The Open is so much more than a competition. It is a time for our community to come together and celebrate all of our hard work in the gym. It’s a time to build community and make new friends. It’s a time to see just how far you can push yourself. The camaraderie and memories that come from The Open are hard to put into words! Plus, as you complete The Open year after year, you will get to compare your previous scores and see your ranking climb as you improve!

What if I can’t do the workout Rx?

Just like everyday in the gym, there are lots of scaling options available for The Open. There are different divisions that you can choose from including: Rx, Age Divisions for Teens (14-17) or Masters (35+), Adaptive, Scaled, or Foundations (perfect if you just started your CrossFit journey). No matter what division you choose, you can be sure that our community will be right beside you cheering you on the whole way!

You can learn more about The Open and Register here. Once you have signed up, below are some tips for making sure this is your best Open yet!

Tip #1: Check your ego at the door.

While The Open is technically a competition, if your name isn’t Tia Toomey or Justin Medeiros, you can check your ego at the door. Instead, come ready to cheer your fellow athletes on and compete against yourself. We encourage you to let the judges count the reps and hold their athletes to the standards while you simply cheer your fellow athletes on! The Open is about doing your absolute best and not worrying about what anyone else is doing.

Tip #2: Dial in your Nutrition

During the three weeks of The Open you are going to be pushing your body to the limits, so it is vital that you are fueling properly. Making sure you are eating and drinking enough so that you are well fueled and can recover each week will be vital. Focus on eating whole, nutritionally dense foods and drinking water throughout the day. If you have specific questions, send us an e-mail or talk to your coach!

Tip #3: Come ready to be a part of something really special!

If you have ever attended Friday Night Lights you know that it is something special. There is nothing quite like screaming and cheering someone on as they get their first muscle-up or PR their clean and jerk. The energy is electric. We highly encourage you to come and be a part of this special time at CrossFit Fireside!

Tip #4: Stay Consistent

Now is the time to block out your calendar and make sure that you are consistent with your workouts, both leading up to and during The Open. This will keep your engines primed throughout the 3 weeks and make sure that your body is conditioned and prepared for each of the workouts.

Tip #5: Know Yourself and Communicate With Your Judge

It is really important to have good communication with your judge during each workout of The Open. Communicating how you like to be cheered on, what your strategy is going to be for the workout, things you like to hear when you are working out, or anything else that would be helpful will make your experience even better. If you constantly trip up on your double unders because you hold your breath, ask your judge to remind you to breathe as you jump rope. If you know that you struggle reaching full depth during wall balls, have your judge communicate when your depth is perfect so you can hold that standard. If you struggle with taking longer breaks than you should, ask your judge to count you down after 30 seconds. Whatever it is, having solid communication with your judge will help you feel calm, cool, and collected.

We hope you will join us for the 2022 CrossFit Open!
